Getting to grips with logistics jargon

Every industry is guilty of it to some extent – jargon. It’s the “insider” language that can make perfect sense to those that have been part of an industry for some time. But for newbies, it can be mindboggling and frustrating. Here, we break down some of the jargon we use in logistics and warehousing…

Storing products in a warehouse to be sold or distributed later. At RT Page, we have a 70,000sqft warehouse in Sussex, UK. We store your goods safely and securely, overseen by a team of experts.

Pick & Pack

This is the process by which an order is gathered from the warehouse (picked) and then packaged and addressed to a recipient (packed). RT Page offer an end to end service, meaning your entire e-commerce operation is handled, from importing goods from around the world through to delivery to your customers, and includes the Pick & Pack process in the middle.

Transport is the part of the process that moves goods from one place to another. We fully manage the transportation process from our warehouse to your end location, using our courier and freight forwarding partners.

3PL is the management of a business’s entire supply chain, from warehousing, to pick and pack services, through to distribution to customers. We’ve got a handy video about 3PL to help you learn more.

The term ‘logistics’ simply refers to the overall commercial activity of transporting goods to customers.

Outsourced services

Outsourcing services means that instead of having an in-house department or employee looking after an aspect of your business, you use a different company to take care of it for you. At RT Page, you can outsource your logistics to us to save you time and money.

Good distribution is essential to the success of a company. It’s the process of spreading goods to customers quickly and efficiently in order for a business to stay competitive.

Freight forwarding

Freight forwarding is a person or company that arranges shipments for businesses to get goods from the manufacturer or producer to a market, customer or final point of distribution. At RT Page, we have forged strong relationships with freight forwarding companies across the world so can be certain that your consignment will be delivered safely, on time and within budget.

Stock control

This is the process of making sure that right amount of stock is maintained at the optimum level to meet customer demand. We report back to you on your stock levels and handle the returns process too.
